Typical Shelf Life (Under Proper Storage)

Most waterproof coatings have a shelf life of 12 to 24 months from the date of production, as indicated on the product packaging or label. Specifics may vary:

Water-based coatings (e.g., acrylic, JS composite coatings): Usually 12–18 months.

Solvent-based coatings (e.g., polyurethane): Often 18–24 months, thanks to slower oxidation in sealed containers.

Asphalt-based coatings: Typically 12–18 months, as extreme temperatures can accelerate degradation.

Factors Shortening Effective Storage Time

Even within the labeled shelf life, improper storage can cause premature deterioration, reducing usable time:

Extreme temperatures: Freezing (for water-based coatings) or overheating (above 35℃) can break emulsions, cause caking, or accelerate solvent evaporation.

Moisture or poor sealing: Humidity may rust metal containers or make coatings absorb water, while loose seals lead to solvent loss or contamination.

Exposure to sunlight: UV rays can degrade binders in coatings, causing discoloration or viscosity changes.

Key Note

Always check the product label for the exact shelf life and batch date. Even within the stated period, if coatings show signs of deterioration (e.g., stratification, hardening, foul odors, or inability to stir evenly), they are no longer usable-regardless of the expiration date.

Proper storage (as outlined in previous guidelines) is critical to maximizing the effective storage duration.
