I. Basic Environmental Requirements

Temperature Control

Most waterproof coatings are suitable for storage in an environment with a temperature of 5-35℃. Extreme temperatures should be avoided:

Low temperatures (especially below 0℃): Water-based waterproof coatings (such as acrylic and JS composite coatings) may freeze, causing emulsion demulsification and stratification. After thawing, their performance will degrade significantly and become unusable.

High temperatures (above 40℃): Solvent-based coatings (such as polyurethane) are prone to volatilization and accelerated oxidation, which may lead to caking and abnormal viscosity. For water-based coatings, high temperatures may cause excessive evaporation of water, resulting in surface skinning.

Anti-freezing measures are required for winter storage (indoor insulation is recommended in northern regions). In summer, avoid direct sunlight (storage in a shady warehouse is advisable).

Dry and Ventilated Conditions

The storage environment must be dry to avoid moisture: Moisture may cause rust on packaging barrels (metal barrels), which in turn contaminates the coating. Meanwhile, a humid environment may make the coating absorb moisture, affecting its film-forming performance.

Maintain ventilation to reduce the accumulation of harmful volatile gases from solvent-based coatings (e.g., free TDI in polyurethane).

II. Fire Prevention and Safety Isolation

Solvent-based coatings (e.g., polyurethane, oil-based waterproof coatings) are flammable and must be kept away from open flames, sparks, and high-temperature heat sources (such as heating systems and stoves). Smoking is strictly prohibited in the storage area, and they must be stored separately from oxidizing agents and flammable/explosive materials (e.g., gasoline, alcohol).

The storage area should be equipped with fire extinguishers (e.g., dry powder, carbon dioxide extinguishers) and posted with "No Open Flames" signs to prevent access by children or unrelated personnel.

III. Packaging and Sealing Management

Unopened products: Check if the packaging is intact, ensure barrel lids/sealing ports are tightly closed to prevent solvent volatilization, moisture infiltration, or coating leakage.

Remaining coatings after opening: Seal them as soon as possible (you can place a layer of plastic wrap over the barrel mouth before closing tightly) to reduce contact with air (to avoid oxidative skinning) and use them up promptly (preferably within 1-2 weeks).

IV. Stacking Specifications

Avoid inverted or tilted stacking to prevent coating leakage. Barreled coatings should be placed upright, and wooden boards can be placed at the bottom to prevent moisture.

The stacking height should not be too high (generally no more than 3-4 layers) to prevent bottom packaging from being damaged by pressure or upper layers from toppling and falling.

Coatings of different types and brands should be stacked separately to avoid confusion. Expired or deteriorated coatings should be stored separately and disposed of in accordance with environmental protection requirements (they must not be discarded at will).

V. Shelf Life and Regular Inspection

The shelf life of waterproof coatings is usually 12-24 months (see specific product instructions). Record the storage date during storage and prioritize the use of older batches.

Regular inspection: Check if the coating has phenomena such as stratification, caking, precipitation, or abnormal odor. If so, it may have deteriorated and should not be used further.

VI. Precautions for Special Types

Polyurethane waterproof coatings (solvent-based): Focus on high-temperature and fire prevention, avoid direct sunlight, and maintain ventilation in the storage area to reduce the concentration of harmful gases.

JS composite waterproof coatings (water-based): The core is anti-freezing. The storage temperature in winter should be ≥5℃. If accidentally frozen, do not use forced heating to thaw it (if it stratifies and cannot be stirred evenly after thawing, it is invalid).

Asphalt-based waterproof coatings: Avoid high temperatures (prone to softening and flowing) and low temperatures (prone to embrittlement and cracking). They must be kept away from fire sources during storage (asphalt is flammable).

 

By following the above methods, the storage life of waterproof coatings can be effectively extended, ensuring their stable performance and avoiding construction quality issues or potential safety hazards caused by improper storage.
